Will Somatics Help With Yoga/Running/Gardening or whatever else you love but can cause aches & pains?
Yes!
In many ways, once you establish an understanding of how & why Somatics works to ease tension, you can apply it to anything you do - from everyday life (walking the dog, sitting at your desk, doing the dishes) to practices such as yoga, aerobics, running, cycling, bodybuilding, & more (including tai chi: a colleague of mine refers to the Clinical Somatics we do as ‘tai chi on the floor’!).
The key is to understand why we never stretch, but ‘replace’ stretching with pandiculating, & how to use motor-sensory awareness to overcome (& ultimately displace/replace) motor-sensory amnesia and the pain - & inefficiency - it so often causes.
Once you’ve learned the fundamental, central movements of Essential Somatics®, & feel pretty familiar with them, you’ll find not only that we ES Teachers can teach you numerous additional movements & variations (both to keep your nervous system on its toes, & to access different muscles/areas of tightness), but you can develop your own variations, & can learn from us (& develop your own) pandiculations to take the place of stretches - whether you’re a runner, weightlifter, or a yogi wanting to prepare yourself well to do challenging poses (such as backbends) with more ease, less discomfort, & safely.
The purpose of this practice is not - for most people - to practice Somatics for its own sake, but to re-train your nervous system to be more supple & at ease in everyday & other activities you love - to make life easier, & fuller. The basic movements help promote fuller breathing, too - & a more efficient functioning of your entire soma & all its systems - so a basic, regular somatic practice & awareness promotes overall good health, too - whatever your particular challenges & most-loved activities.
