Part 1: Part 1 identifies what pain is, what ‘causes’ it – and explains the difference between ‘acute’ and ‘chronic’ pain.
It outlines why movement and re-training your brain are crucial to addressing pain, and explains what traditional pain science and most medical approaches to treating pain have got ‘wrong’ in understanding the experience of pain. It presents a somatic understanding of pain, and approach to getting rid of it – and how this is supported by neuroscience.
Part 2 talks about habituation as both a help in daily life, and as a cause of pain & problems – when we suffer from getting ‘stuck’ in bad, unhelpful habits of movement and posture.
It also introduces the key concept of SMA (sensory motor amnesia) as well as the technique of pandiculation – which Hanna Somatics uses to get OUT of bad habits, and so out of pain and into more efficient, pain-free movement as well as better posture and greater mobility and flexibility.
Part 3 focuses on the relationship between pain and trauma, and on the importance of the brain’s ability to change (neuroplasticity). In it, I talk more about the 3 Stress Reflexes and how their patterns can get stuck in your soma, causing pain, tightness, and more.
I also talk about the myth of ageing, remind you of myths around stretching and strengthening (covered in Part 2), and explain why just “doing the movements” in Hanna Somatics is not, alone, what will get you out of pain: you also need to sense the movements, learn more about yourself, and use variations of movement work to address your particular ‘patterns’ and how pain and tension are held in your soma.
