Can Somatics Alleviate Headaches?
With any tension headache, Essential Somatics® Movement can be very effective as it’s used to release tight muscles in the back of the body - or, the whole body - & this is precisely what causes almost all headaches.
Importantly, learning a Somatics practice over time, & maintaining it, can dramatically reduce or eradicate tension headaches - along with other aches & pains.
If you’re unlucky enough to suffer from migraines, the movements can help - but they will not, on their own, combat them. A Somatics practice can & does help many people manage them better, though: this is because it increases your ability to release & relax tension, & so - especially over time - can enhance your functioning as a whole system.
People who suffer from tension headaches are mostly those who suffer mostly from tight back muscles (all over the back - not just “the back”), so often movements designed to addres the Tight Front Reflex (Hanna’s “Green Light Reflex”) are the most helpful. This is because these work on muscles from the centre out, including those that go into the back of the head - which are often those most to blame for tension headaches. However, as with all advice around practising Somatics, it’s better to work with releasing the whole body, for the most effective & longest-lasting results.
